Ramsey - 08 Oct 2009

I just returned from a trip to the US and I can honestly say there is nothing better than landing in Philadelphia with the warm smiles and welcome. The customs agent, as I raced by and handed in my sheet, said “Welcome back. Have a safe ride home.” “Thank You.” What a wonderful way to land. And what a wonderful way to look at your job. It wasn’t me. He genuinely felt that it was nice to have people in his hometown. Of course, the first thing I thought was—how great would life be if we all welcomed people into our lives, or through our lives, this way. People don’t always get to choose where they go so why not welcome them when they arrive? Even if people do choose, it’s scary. You may be running away, you may be searching for something, you may even just be interested in something new- whatever it is a welcome smile, a “Come sit here” and an “I’d like to be your friend” can make all the difference. That’s from experience. We all have moments of doubt, especially around big life-changing decisions, and a comforting smile and an understanding hug really can change you whole perspective. So change someone’s perspective. Reach out and make them feel welcome. It’s worth it and you really will make the world a better place.
