Ramsey - 06 Nov 2009

I am just back from a trip to Abu Dhabi. I had a rather large work event there which involved many people from around the world, as well as a few locals. “Local” in Abu Dhabi is a bit of a misnomer as most of the local don’t need to work and everyone else is some form of expatriate. While some things are different: pace, service, dress; most things are the same. People trying to make their way in the world and live with the way they are making it. For some it is more difficult to cope; constantly searching for answers or epiphanies. For others, they may focus on material goods, or just getting on the next 24 hours. Some find it easy, some struggle. Some feel put upon and some revel.

You find those people everywhere. It is simply geography that divides you from your fellow human beings. Geography and attitude. Are you contributing to the greater good? Are you thinking of yourself? Are you thinking only of yourself? Are you lucky? Do you realise it? If you are reading this, then you have access to a computer, you’ve been educated enough to read, you got to this site in the first place- I’d say you are doing pretty well.

A friend told me a story about going to parenting classes upon learning that she was pregnant. She said “We got there, and the teacher said, most people look at their parents in one of two ways. Either they feel like they owe something to their parents, or they feel like their parents owe them.” She said, she and her husband looked at each other, said “Do you feel that way?” “No.” And left. It’s a big burden to feel like you owe or are owed. And people carry it with them every day. I myself feel like I owe it to my parents to life my life in a way that makes me happy. Sometimes that feels like a burden. Sometimes it feels like a responsibility and still other times it feels inspirational. I am lucky to know I have their support. I am lucky to have it. I am just lucky.

This week, have a look at your fellow human beings. Remember we are all doing the best we can- even if it isn’t obvious at the moment- and we all have an easier time if we have the support of others. It may be our parents, our friends, even our children, but a little support can go a long way to building the bridges with our fellow human beings and making the world a better place. Good luck out there.
