Ramsey - 23 Nov 2010

That’s where we find ourselves at this time of year. As Americans, it is a time to look at our lives as they are at the moment, relish the people we love and acknowledge the wonderful blessings that have come our way.  We all have our different traditions - and our similar ones. In my family, we go around the table and share something we are thankful for. Perhaps a high point of the year, perhaps a lucky escape from a low point. This year, I have a new family member to be thankful for. And I have a fantastic life, full of wonderful friends and family. Truly a blessing. And that leads me to the, always important, question- what I am giving back? There are people truly in need in this world. Am I doing my part? Or better yet, more than my part, to ease the suffering of the world? Or even just my neighbor’s?

It doesn’t have to be daunting and it doesn’t have to be a lifelong commitment to volunteering activities. It just needs to be there, in the back of your mind, with every action. Does this make the world a better place? Does it make it somewhere we all want to live? Does it create a community that we love and one that we all not only feel apart of, but also invested in preserving? Does it welcome new and different friends?

My Thanksgiving, like my life, brings together people from all different walks. Different educations, careers, interests and passions. All those people come together to share in something I truly value: the diversity of this world and the incredible experiences available to us all.

That’s my recommendation to you this Thanksgiving. Celebrate something different. Welcome that into your home and your life and enjoy just how different we can all be. We can all live in this world together and we can all make it a better place just by being here.
